Old But Still Trying
I don't know that I have a favorite but those closest have added value for me. The Ida Lake AMA (Blue Earth County) is a gem in that it provides both upland ground nesting bird habitat as well as water access by boat. At my age chest waders and cattails are beyond my capability to navigate.
Maple River WMA is a standout, especially now since the acquisition of the parcel West of the main unit. (Fitzsimmons?) It gives added turkey and deer hunting opportunities and the bottomland provides good winter cover. Predation may be a problem though.
The Minnesota River AMA is another gem, and the Clancy WMA provides much needed additional access to turkey hunting. Our club has adopted both the Clancy WMA and according to Mike Maling, USFWS, we (Minnesota Pheasants, Inc.) are the reason they moved into Blue Earth County for acquisitions.
We are currently attempting to get out from under a tile agreement on a 400 acre parcel South of Madelia, MN and it appears that we are getting closer. It is now enrolled in the Walk-In program and once we are released from the agreement it will be offered to MNDNR. That will then become my favorite because I will have skin in the game.
