WMA/AMA Planning for the Eastern Broadleaf Forest

Thank you for your interest in the development of landscape-level plans for Minnesota's Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) and Aquatic Management Areas (AMAs). These plans will guide habitat management, public use, conservation priorities, and long-term stewardship across Minnesota’s diverse landscapes.

The following questionnaire is specific to WMAs and AMAs that are located within the Eastern Broadleaf Forest ecological province. Feedback gathered through this questionnaire will be used to help inform the content of the WMA/AMA plan for the Eastern Broadleaf Forest.

The Eastern Broadleaf Forest ecological province covers much of central and southeastern Minnesota, stretching from the Twin Cities and St. Cloud areas down through Mankato, Rochester, and the Mississippi River blufflands. The landscape features a mix of oak savanna, hardwood forest, prairie openings, river valleys, and rich agricultural plains, making it an important area for the long-term conservation of habitat and the associated hunting, trapping, angling, birdwatching, and related outdoor activities.

The Eastern Broadleaf Forest ecological province contains 345 WMAs and 334 AMAs, covering a total of 163,661 acres and 10,518 acres, respectively. Around 30% of this total acreage comes from the three major units found in this province: Whitewater WMA, Carlos Avery WMA, and Vermillion Highlands WMA.
